Program Topic:
Dietary supplements are sought by more than 70% of the US population to support optimal health outcomes and to address common nutritional gaps that exist with standard American diets. Dietary supplements are widely accessible to consumers as over-the-counter or retail purchases. These products most typically consist of ingredients with established recommended dietary allowances and daily values (RDAs and DVs) for safe and well-tolerated consumption, or are documented as being present in US commerce for more than 30 years, and are associated with traditional use or clinical studies in scientific literature. In addition, Dietary supplement products undergo a rigorous regulatory process in the US to help ensure they are safe, efficacious, and of high quality for use within relatively healthy populations and in accordance with appropriate manufacturing, marketing, monitoring/safety vigilance, and reporting regulations. These requirements are also a reference point and/or in alignment with international regulatory standards in the EU and other regions. This presentation addresses the US’s pre- and post-market regulatory requirements for dietary supplements. It also briefly reviews some common regulatory scenarios in EU member states and other European countries.
